Plantain vs Banana — What's the Difference?
Plantain
Larger, more angular fruit with thicker skin. High in starch, low in sugar, and doesn't sweeten much even when ripe grown to be cooked: fried, roasted, boiled or mashed, never eaten raw.
Cooking Banana (Matoke)
Prepared the same way as plantain; boiled, steamed or mashed while green but with smaller bunches and fingers. Ng'ombe and Uganda Green are the common matoke varieties in Kenya.
Sweet / Dessert Banana
Smaller, thinner-skinned fruit that ripens sweet and is eaten raw Cavendish, Apple Banana, Gold Finger. Grown mainly for fresh eating and export.
Growing Needs
All three share the same broad requirements; warm temperatures, 1,000–2,000mm rainfall, well-drained loam so the choice usually comes down to market and taste, not growing conditions.
Best Growing Regions
1. Eastern (Ukambani)
Machakos, Makueni — warm and semi-arid; the wetter pockets around the hills grow plantain well, but drier stretches need irrigation and heavy mulching to see it through dry spells.
Coast
Mombasa, Kilifi — warm and humid, the traditional heartland of plantain growing.
Western
Kakamega, Busia, Bungoma — reliable rainfall and fertile loam.
Nyanza
Kisumu, Siaya, Kisii — warm lowlands well suited to year-round growth.
Central & Highlands
Kiambu, Murang'a, Kericho, Meru — grows well below 1,800m, but use windbreaks against cold.
The Growing Journey
Choose Land & Prepare the Soil
Pick a sunny, well-drained site, waterlogging is the fastest way to lose a young plant to root rot. Plantain does best in deep, fertile loam with a pH of 5.5–7.0.
- Clear weeds, rocks and debris, then till to a depth of 30–40cm.
- On poorly drained ground, build raised beds or ridges.
- Work in well-rotted manure or compost across the plot before digging holes.
Get Planting Material
Plantain is propagated from suckers, the shoots that grow from an established mother plant's base or from disease-free tissue-culture seedlings.
- Tissue-culture seedlings cost more upfront but guarantee true-to-type, disease-free stock.
- If using suckers, choose healthy, sword-shaped shoots from a productive mother plant.
Dig Holes & Plant
Dig holes at least 60cm wide, spacing plants 4ft by 4ft in a square pattern (5m rows if you'll use machinery later). Dig each hole 2.5 to 4ft deep — deeper on light, sandy soils so the corm sits well anchored; shallower on heavier clay where drainage is slower.
- Mix the topsoil with a bucket of manure or compost and return it to the hole.
- Set the sucker's corm in the centre, orient the cut side against the hole wall, and cover firmly.
- Water thoroughly right after planting.
- Plant at the onset of the rains (March–April or October–November) so roots establish before any dry spell.
Mulch, Weed & Feed the Mat
Plantain needs consistently moist — never soggy — soil, especially in its first three to four months. Most of this work happens right around the mat, the cluster of mother plant and suckers growing from one corm.
- Mulch the mat, not just the row. Pile 10–15cm of dry grass, banana leaves, or crop residue in a ring around each mat, starting a hand's width out from the pseudostems. This locks moisture into the root zone where the mat's shallow, spreading roots actually feed, breaks the force of rain so it doesn't cap and erode the loosened soil around the corm, and slowly rots down into organic matter that feeds the mat as it composts. Top it up every few months, and keep it off the stem itself to avoid collar rot.
- Weed the mat by hand, not with a hoe. Plantain corms and feeder roots sit close to the surface, so a hoe or slasher near the base easily wounds them, opening the door to weevils and rot. Pull weeds by hand within the mulched ring, and only slash or hoe further out between mats. Left unweeded, grass and weeds around the mat outcompete it for the same shallow-rooted nutrients and water the mulch is trying to conserve.
- Feed on a simple schedule: since we are rooting for organic and regenerative agriculture we advise use of livestock manure, precisely cows. Note that it MUST be dry.
Manage Suckers & Support the Plant
Each mat throws up many suckers as it grows — left unchecked they compete with each other for nutrients.
- Keep 3–4 healthy suckers per mat (the mother plant plus daughter, granddaughter and follower), removing the rest.
- Once bunches start forming, prop the plant with a strong wooden pole — a full bunch is heavy enough to snap the stem.
Harvest
Most varieties are ready 9–12 months after planting. Harvest when fingers fill out and round off but are still green and firm — they ripen off the plant during transport and storage.
- Cut the whole bunch with a sharp panga, supporting its weight as it comes free.
- After harvest, cut the spent pseudostem down — this pushes energy into the young suckers you kept, which will fruit next.
